Abstract To communicate successfully, listeners must decode both the literal and intended meanings of a speaker’s message. This ability is especially crucial when processing indirect replies as can differ significantly from what was said. How native non-native speakers in this an open question. The present study investigated differences time course reply Mandarin speakers. EEG signals were recorded while participants presented with conversations that differed their directness. For replies, exhibited larger left anterior N400 posterior late positive component (LPC). Conversely, left-distributed LPC delayed LPC. Findings support exhibit potentially because cognitive resource limitations. have implications for broad range investigations on human communication second language processing.

Abstract Social hierarchical information impacts language comprehension. Nevertheless, the specific process underlying integration of linguistic and extralinguistic sources social has not been identified. For example, Chinese verb 赡养, /shan4yang3/, ‘support: provide for needs comfort one’s elders’, only allows its Agent to have a lower status than Patient. Using eye-tracking, we examined precise time course these semantic selectional restrictions verbs during natural reading. A 2 (Verb Type: vs. non-hierarchical) × (Social Hierarchy Sequence: match mismatch) design was constructed investigate effect interaction on early late eye-tracking measures. Thirty-two participants (15 males; age range: 18–24 years) read sentences judged plausibility each sentence. The results showed that violations induced shorter first fixation duration but longer regression path total reading sentence-final nouns (NP2). These differences were absent under non-hierarchical conditions. suggest mismatch between is immediately detected processed.
