The spread of misinformation has become a central concern in American politics. Recent studies social media sharing suggest that Republicans are considerably more likely to share fake news than Democrats. However, such inferences confounded by the far greater supply right-leaning news—Republicans may indeed be prone news, or they simply exposed it. This article disentangles these competing explanations examining intentions balanced information environment. Using large national survey YouGov respondents, we show ideologically concordant Democrats, but this gap is not enough explain differences observed online. Encouragingly, however, also find accuracy prompt interventions reduce equally effective across parties, suggesting among an intractable problem.

Recent academic debate has seen the emergence of claim that misinformation is not a significant problem. We believe arguments used to support this minimizing position are flawed, particularly if interpreted (e.g., by policymakers or public) as suggesting can be safely ignored. Here, we rebut two main claims, namely substantive concern (1) due its low incidence and (2) because it no causal influence on notable political behavioral outcomes. Through critical review current literature, demonstrate prevalence non-negligible reasonably inclusive definitions applied impacts important beliefs behaviors. Both scholars should therefore continue take seriously.

A long-standing debate in political psychology considers whether individuals update their beliefs and attitudes the direction of evidence or grow more confident convictions when confronted with counter-attitudinal arguments. Though recent studies have shown that instances latter tendency, which scholars termed attitude polarization “belief backfire,” are rarely observed settings involving hot-button issues viral misinformation, we know surprisingly little about how participants respond to information targeting deeply held attitudes, a key condition for triggering polarization. We develop tailored experimental design measures participants’ core issue positions exposes them personalized using large language model GPT-3. find credible polarization, but only arguments contentious vitriolic. Our review of 154 articles published over the last decade portrays an evolution status research. This body literature has transitioned from viewing as a monolithic construct to appreciating its inherently multidimensional nature, characterized by diverse types, functions, levels, and audience structures. Although this shift expanded our knowledge, it also introduced increased complexity fragmentation. To systematize scattered work on multifaceted view status, we develop comprehensive framework that integrates research findings. For each constituent part framework, key themes insights in outline future directions. goal is provide clear roadmap navigate increasing research, encouraging more precise theorizing transversal exploration across different dimensions status.

Cryptocurrency is a digital asset secured by cryptography that has become popular medium of exchange and investment known for its anonymous transactions, unregulated markets, volatile prices. Given the subculture traders it created, implications financial markets monetary policy, scholars have recently begun to examine political, psychological, social characteristics cryptocurrency investors. A review existing literature suggests owners may possess higher-than-average levels nonnormative psychological traits exhibit range non-mainstream political identities. Research on online misinformation has evolved rapidly, but organizing its results and identifying open research questions is difficult without a systematic approach. We present the Online Misinformation Engagement Framework, which classifies people's engagement with into four stages: selecting information sources, choosing what to consume or ignore, evaluating accuracy of and/or credibility source, judging whether how react (e.g., liking sharing). outline entry points for interventions at each stage pinpoint two early stages-source selection-as relatively neglected processes that should be addressed further improve ability contend misinformation.
