Abstract We explore the surprising lexical be construction in English (e.g. Why don’t you quiet? ). After an overview of previous discussions, investigation use COCA and SOAP corpora is provided. It shown that its distribution highly skewed it completely felicitous only under a very limited set conditions. An account then provided showing conditions license are inherited from more general constructions, most importantly negative imperative ‘ ’ construction. In this light, suggested construction, with special properties, provides strong evidence for constructional approach to linguistic competence along lines Goldberg (1995), Culicover Jackendoff (2005), Sag (2012).
