The aim of this study was to determine the epidemiology, incidence and genetic diversity classic human astrovirus (HAstV) in inpatient children under 5 years age for acute gastroenteritis (AGE). A hospital-based surveillance conducted across Yunnan Province investigate HAstV among AGE patients. Viral RNA extracted from stool samples collected January 2015 December 2023 hospitalized with AGE. Demographic clinical data were analysed. eligible (n = 2501) screened via real-time RT‒PCR assays presence classical a PCR diagnostic kit rapid detection (XABT, China). positive (Ct < 25) subjected next-generation sequencing (NGS), phylogenetic analysis performed genotypic characterization. total 2501 old analysed 2023. detected 4.88% (122/2501) study. There 1.46 times more male patients than female (1484/1017), their rates 4.58% (68/1484) 5.31% (54/1017), respectively, no statistically significant difference (χ2 0.688 P 0.407). Among patients, average 12 ± 17 (monthly age, M Q). Children between 2 4 affected by HAstVs, while highest positivity rate found 24–35 month group (7.56%, 17/225). Interestingly, 2019 17.79% (45/253), which significantly higher that other during period 126.229, 0.05). revealed prevalence greater summer (10.04%, 50/498) seasons Yunnan. Seventeen strains sequenced. Further complete genome HAstV-1 – HAstV-4 genotypes. most commonly genotype, all 11 classified 1a subtype. This provided valuable insights into epidemiology genotype HAstVs results can be used future preventive measurements development effective vaccines.
