In order to explore a strategy for synthesizing halogen-bonded metal-organic cocrystals by utilizing metal complexes whose pendant chloride group and the morpholinyl oxygen atom enables halogen bonding, we have synthesized four pentacoordinated Cu(II) Zn(II) of MCl2L general formula (L=imines prepared condensation reaction 4-aminoethylmorpholine with 2-pyridinecarboxyaldehide or 2-acetylpyridine). The were further cocrystallized selected iodoperfluorinated benzenes. Out 20 combinations, 14 experiments yielded crystals suitable single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Structural analysis revealed that in 7 bonds are formed both as well atoms. 6 only I⋅⋅⋅Cl present, while one cocrystal exclusively featured I⋅⋅⋅Omorpholinyl bonds. We observed 5 bonding motifs MCl2 moiety, which each can be an acceptor bond, two, none at all. most common motif our work (6 cocrystals) is where chlorine other does not participate bonding. crystal packing directed architectures either zero-, one- two-dimensional.
