This work examines the relationship between defects, pore size, and functionalization as it pertains to enthalpy of adsorption carbon dioxide zirconium-based metal–organic frameworks (UiO-66 UiO-67). When UiO-66 is synthesized without more exothermic relative when contains defects (−24.3 vs −20.9 kJ/mol). We repeated experiments with pristine/defective UiO-67 observed opposite trend (−16.9 −21 kJ/mol), albeit less exothermic. With exception defective UiO-66, which had no change in adsorption, dehydrating cluster (−21 kJ/mol) (−14 produced materials that were upon adsorption. indicates there a hierarchy interactions can independently or tandem increase These include small tetrahedral hydrogen bonding, dispersion interaction enhanced by electron-withdrawing Zr(IV). Postsynthetic modification node methanol/methoxy groups strong effect on defect containing UiO-66. In this MOF, sizes appeared nearly identical pristine contained an −28 kJ/mol; highest value obtained work.
