Plastic degradation and the resultant production of microplastics has an important effect on environment fauna across world. This paper shows that colourant incorporated into plastic formulations a significant stability plastics. A static experimental exposure differently coloured polypropylene bottle tops from same manufacturer to moderate climate over 3 years showed black, white silver plastics were almost unaffected whereas specific blue, green especially red pigments used in this study significantly degraded. The second part collected littered HDPE containers remote South African beach analysed their condition as function given manufacturing date stamp. Most items black or samples up 45 old found with relatively little environmental other than mild abrasion. It appears carbon titanium dioxide colourants protect polymer photolytic degradation. While anthraquinone, phthalocyanine diketopyrrolopyrrole enable UV light degrade leading brittle plastics, promoting formation microplastics, it is likely do not strongly absorb will result similar

Microplastics have been investigated over the last decade as potential transport vectors for other pollutants. However, specific role of plastic aging, in which plastics change their characteristics time when exposed to environmental agents, has overlooked. Therefore, sorption experiments were herein conducted using virgin and aged (by ozone treatment or rooftop weathering) microplastic particles LDPE - low-density polyethylene, PET poly(ethylene terephthalate), uPVC unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride). The organic micropollutants (OMPs) selected sorbates comprise a diversified group priority substances contaminants emerging concern, including pharmaceutical (florfenicol, trimethoprim, diclofenac, tramadol, citalopram, venlafaxine) pesticides (alachlor, clofibric acid, diuron, pentachlorophenol), analyzed at trace concentrations (each ≤100 μg L-1). Sorption kinetics equilibrium isotherms obtained, well confirmation that aging degree microplastics plays major capacities. results show an increased several OMPs on compared pristine samples, i.e. capacity increasing from one two sorbed (maximum 3 g-1 per sorbate) up nine after 10 sorbate). extent depends OMP, polymer effectiveness treatment. modifications (e.g. chemical structure) between linked certain OMPs, allowing better understand different affinities observed. Additionally, phytotoxicity tests performed evaluate mobility effects (on germination early growth) combo species plants (Lepidium sativum Sinapis alba). These suggest low no effect under conditions tested but indicate need further research behavior soil-plant systems.

Synthetic textiles are considered a prime source of microplastics fibers which prevalent shape microplastic pollution. Whilst the release mechanisms and formation such have been so far mainly studied in connection with laundry washing, there some studies emerging that describe also other pathways for as abrasion during wearing. The aim this study was to consider weathering another process contributing their presence environment. Four types polyester fabrics were selected exposed artificial by UV-light two months. extracted every 15 days quantify characterize formed microplastics. Microplastic diameter matching size observed. However, additional different shapes formed. These included partially broken fibers, thin below fiber fabrics, flattened into ribbon, non-fibrous released evinced physical alterations on surface form pits cracks. exhibited steep increase number progressing weathering; from hundreds per gram textile unaged hundred thousands (150,000-450,000 MPF/g) after 2 months weathering. Additional 10,000-52,000 unfibrous microplastics/g weathered fabrics. While plain showed higher releases than interlock fleece, further research is needed evaluate importance architecture comparison production history Based washing same textiles, we can estimate potential be 20-40 times larger only.
