Abstract Precise control over the nanofluid behavior of polyelectrolyte‐based membranes is a primary step toward understanding structure‐morphology‐property relationships to ultimately determine mass transfer characteristics. In this study, high‐performance multistacked cation exchange membrane (CEM) with heterogeneous structure and versatile surface chemistry was developed achieve selective ion conductance. The self‐assembled CEM can facilitate permeation fluxes 2.9 mol m −2 h −1 for K + 0.22 Mg 2+ , reaching mono/multivalent ionic selectivity up 13, outperforming mono/divalent fractionation when compared state‐of‐the‐art membranes. Molecular dynamic (MD) simulations illustrated transport trajectory in hierarchical channels angstrom‐scale cavities using multilayered CEMs. Both experimental measurements theoretical indicated that associated large disparity energy barrier between cations, which origin differences dehydration‐rehydration processes angstrom‐confinement channels.

Abstract Surface grafting has been widely used to tune hydrophilicity and chargeability of nanofiltration membranes for reducing membrane fouling potential. However, surface typically leads a significant pore narrowing resultant permeability loss, monocharged still struggles resist mixed foulants with different charges. Herein, ionic liquid (IL)‐ethanol (EtOH) solution containing polyethyleneimine (PEI) is rearrange the nascent polyamide layer. The high affinity IL PA layer low diffusion steric hindrance EtOH contribute swelling PEI deep grafting, during which “self‐regulation” effect (larger pores would be filled more molecules) narrows size distribution enhances hydrophilicity. nearly charge‐neutral smooth separation shows impressive antifouling capacity hydrophobic macromolecules charged molecules, along long‐term operating stability real wastewater treatment. This study emphasizes importance solvent properties on behavior.
