Human norovirus, a major global cause of gastroenteritis, forms vesicle-cloaked virus clusters (known as viral vesicles), showing increased infectivity and persistence in aquatic environments. We investigated UVB disinfection, key mechanism solar disinfection commonly employed developing countries, targeting murine norovirus vesicles free noroviruses surrogates for human noroviruses. At low concentrations 109 gene copies per liter, loss quantified by the integrated cell culture-reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (ICC-RT-qPCR) indicated that were 1.51 to 1.73 times more resistant compared viruses. Virus inactivation was primarily due protein damage bicinchoninic acid Western blot assays, binding host cells RT-qPCR. Molecular simulations predicted oxidation tyrosine residue 1 prohibited binding. irradiation viral/vesicle proteins resulted 1O2 formation time-resolved phosphorescence, first time, endogenous confirmed contribute UVB. Our study recognizes limitation particularly wastewater treatment advocates enhanced strategies protect public health.
