Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have moved into focus as a critically important response variable in global change biology, given the increasing environmental and human health threat posed by these genes. However, we propose that elevated levels of ARGs should also be considered factor change, not just response. We provide evidence are factor, since this phenomenon is linked to activity, occurs globally, affects biota. explain why could rather than organisms containing them; highlight difference between presence antibiotics, which necessarily caused multiple factors. Importantly, shifting perspective opens new avenues research, where can experimental treatment. This includes asking questions about how ARG interact with other factors, or influence ecosystem processes, biodiversity trophic relationships. Global biology stands profit from framing terms capturing more completely real extent impacts on planet.
