Abstract This study explores a new approach in modeling explicit targets for decarbonization of the electricity and transport sectors combined with separate carbon dioxide removal (CDR) based on current plans strategies put forward or expected by countries. Additionally, we examine an equitable "fair share" scenario that aligns sectoral timelines CDR liabilities respective capabilities In this "capability" burden-sharing principle, developed countries financial means to support their climate change mitigation efforts undertake faster energy transition while developing lower incomes are allowed extended timeline exempted from excessive obligations. Here, modify technology-rich multi-sector model manner where emission reduction can be modeled. Our analysis reveals adopting sector-specific strategy shows potential residual emissions up 35%, 35-45% decrease requirement. Furthermore, not only help mitigate adverse impacts but also promote sustainability supporting food security reducing global demand water, land, fertilizer necessary production negative emissions.

Abstract Deep decarbonization is essential for achieving the Paris Agreement goals, and carbon dioxide removal required to address residual emissions achieve net-zero targets. However, implications of delaying deployment technologies remain unclear. We quantify how different methods their timing affect net zero by 2050 in United States. Our findings show that postponing novel until mid-century forces accelerated energy-intensive sectors, reducing at least 12% compared with near-term removal. This delay increases transition costs, requiring prices 59–79% higher than deployment. It also heightens risk premature fossil fuel retirement electricity sector, leading 128–220 billion USD losses gradual scale up starting now. A balanced, co-deployment mitigates risks associated relying on a single approach addresses sustainability scalability concerns.
