Intensification of wastewater treatment residual (i.e., biosolid) applications to watersheds can alter the amount and composition organic matter (OM) mobilized into waterways. To identify novel tracers biosolids, characterization biosolids their impacts on OM in recipient ecosystems is required. Here, water-soluble was leached from surface soils Florida pastures with differing levels biosolid amendment an adjacent control site. The endmember further constrained by extracting sourced four facilities. Nontargeted analysis molecules negative-ion electrospray ionization 21 T Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry examined molecular soil leachates identified formulas unique these amended soils. Overall, were enriched aliphatic (+16.3% relative abundance) heteroatomic (+42.5% RA) depleted aromatic (−33.5% compared leachates. A subset 297 present only not leachates), vast majority which contained nitrogen (66%) or sulfur (27%). identification a key step identifying movement through impacted watersheds.

The increasing amount of sewage sludge generated during wastewater treatment poses both growing management challenge and environmental issues. Sludge with many co-occurring contaminants is often destined to land application which raises concern regarding human health. It also a good integrator in time space can provide valuable information on consumption pattern change over time. Here, we have conducted suspect nontarget screening (SNTS) from 29 plants (WWTPs) covering 30% the Swiss population. Over 500 were identified up 382 quantified, concentrations ranging few ng/g several thousand ng/g, translated into total annual loads approximately 5 g micropollutants per citizen. distribution detected substances was dominated by pharmaceuticals terms number compounds (>250) personal care products concentration (e.g., 75 μg/g for linoleic acid). Homologous series analysis revealed presence multiple classes surfactants among those highest signal intensities sludge. Principal component hierarchical clustering showed that spatial across Switzerland not homogeneous, while Pearson correlation indicated changes be attributed different anaerobic digestion times WWTPs.
