Abstract The spatial representativeness (SR) of air quality monitoring sites is critical for ensuring that gathered data accurately reflect the broader area's quality. Evaluating SR at a national scale and its long‐term trends particularly important countries like China, where both networks have changed dramatically over time. Here, we used 1‐km daily pollutant concentrations from China High Air Pollutants dataset to assess yearly state‐controlled in 2013 2022 multiple pollutants. With number increasing 460 1,590 2022, our results showed total area increased by 89% PM 2.5 , 149% 10 2,190% O 3 . While mainly drove these increases, impact varied different phases. Interestingly, rise 2020 actually led decrease (−18,300 km 2 ) (−14,200 ). Additionally, found applying pollution exposure assessments did not improve their accuracy city levels when compared official method, which involves calculation using arithmetic mean aggregation sites. This was related poor performance, with more than half population being uncovered areas 85% Chinese cities. Nevertheless, demonstrated benefits city‐level attainment.
