Acetylene carbon black (CB), an oleophilic and hydrophobic substance, is often used as additive in composite materials. However, its potential for stabilizing water-in-oil emulsions the properties of formed materials remain to be explored. Herein, elastic porous monolith with a high strength 1.6 MPa was synthesized through high-internal-phase emulsion template method using butyl acrylate oil phase. Incorporating CB into phase synergistic use surfactant remarkably improved stability emulsion. Moreover, increasing content further enhanced material's hydrophobicity, mechanical properties, absorption capabilities. Notably, as-synthesized material exhibited exceptional porosity (88.3%), enabling rapid oils organic solvents (achieving saturated capacity within 10 s) along (39.3 g/g dichloromethane). Furthermore, it demonstrated effective oil–water separation, reusability.

Nano-biochar (NBC) is a promising tool for sustainable remediation of contaminants in aquatic environments. However, the presence ubiquitous ions and dissolved organic matter (DOM) can impact NBC aggregation, resulting reduced application efficacy potential ecological risks. Understanding regulating aggregation offers valuable insights its deployment. This study integrated batch experiments, theoretical models, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance-mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS), density functional theory (DFT) calculations to explore behaviors mechanisms with coexisting model DOM. kinetics followed classical Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) both NBC-ions NBC-ions-fulvic acid (FA) solutions, indicating that process controlled by Van der Waals forces electrostatic repulsion. Mono/di-valent electrolytes promoted whereas FA moderated it, higher molecular weight fractions exhibiting superior performance. Three-dimensional excitation-emission (3D-EEM) fluorescence spectra Parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) analyses revealed HA-like substances, FA-like form complex ions, thereby moderating aggregation. FTICR-MS scans identified lignin substances aromatic structures as key components effectively reduce mono/di-valent electrolytes. DFT confirmed spontaneously complexes electrolytes, potentially research highlights strategies applications into behavior nanoparticles

Concern over the contamination of freshwater ecosystems with carbon black (CB) is increasing. Here, toxicity CB to phytoplankton (Chlorella pyrenoidosa) was evaluated; upon exposure, median effective concentration for 72 h 23.4 mg/L. underwent significant photooxidation during 15 days light irradiation, although phototransformation generally completed by day 7. Algal growth inhibition induced phototransformed (TCB) at 1 mg/L 64.1% greater than that parent CB. Mechanistically, 1) triggered release highly toxic byproducts, which inhibited algal 18.9%; 2) metabolomic results demonstrate suppression and nitrogen assimilation in cells TCB 13.2-53.7% CB; 3) exhibited reactive oxygen species production ability, more membrane damage. A full-factorial experiment (26+1 runs) showed combined effect temperature suspended mineral particles, as well electrical conductivity, primary environmental factor mediated toxicity, respectively. The predicted Taihu Lake regional distribution, posed a risk aquatic These findings highlight importance particulate contaminant transformation factors when evaluating their risk.
