Fluorophores exhibiting strong solvatochromism are strongly desired for applications in cellular imaging, photodevices, and fluorescence sensing. However, achieving high quantum yields increasingly polar environments remains a significant challenge due to the complex balance required between transition dipole moment low emission energy. In this study, we present an acridine derivative of pyrene, Ad-Py, which features donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) scaffold. Notably, fluorophore demonstrated solvatochromic property, red-shift 113 nm, along with (Φf = 83.5-90.6%) from less solvent n-hexane highly dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The incorporation pyrene moiety effectively extended π-conjugation Ad-Py solvents finely tuned proportion charge transfer (CT) state, leading enhanced yields. Moreover, its sensitivity microenvironmental changes, facilitated visual measurement SO2, detection limit <10 ppb.

It is challenging to predict optical properties of fluorescent dyes, especially in the crystalline state, owing uncertainty conformation, packing, and coupling. Herein, we elucidate decisive role molecular conformation packing fluorescence emissions some materials based on experimental results theoretical calculations. Two homologous fluorophores (Ph-MP Ph-HP) were synthesized, they both exhibited interesting crystallization-induced emission enhancement quenching. Although homologues show almost same behavior solid on-off their crystals depends upon different factors. Emission Ph-MP governed by twisted intramolecular charge transfer effect, while Ph-HP relied π-π stacking. Based this understanding, application single-molecule-based versatile information encryption was demonstrated. believed that evidence unveiled mechanism for effect crystallization will contribute development high-performance luminescent materials.
