A series of montmorillonites with different Mg and Al contents (Na2x(Al2(1-x),Mg2x)Si4O10(OH)2·nH2O, where 0 < x ≤ 1) were prepared by the hydrothermal method characterized MAS NMR, XRD, N2 adsorption-desorption, FTIR pyridine, TPD-NH3, SEM, thermal analysis techniques. The material obtained without aluminum (x = 1), or a minimum amount it 0.9) is trioctahedral saponite becoming fully dioctahedral montmorillonite at its highest content 0.1). introduction into structure during synthesis leads to appearance pronounced Brønsted acidity, concentration which was in 0.1. In contrast, Al-free sample practically Lewis acid (L/B 71.3). studied materials possessed catalytic activity isomerization α-pinene, correlated strength sites. Al-containing yielded camphene selectivity 50-53%, presence medium strong sites favored formation. Mg-montmorillonite almost exclusively acidity demonstrated an unusually high limonene (44.5%). To best our knowledge, this first work describing synthetic Al-Mg montmorillonite. However, ease varying nature opens up prospect their use number reactions, including those for renewable terpene compounds.
