The antifouling performance of a zwitterionic sulfobetaine-hydroxyethyl-containing polymethylmethacrylate ter-co-polymer (PSBM) is evaluated against three photosynthetic strains, namely Chlorella sp., Nannochloropsis and Arthrospira maxima. PSBM-coated (PMMA) surfaces displayed significantly reduced propensity for biofilm formation compared to rough untreated controls, leaving clean after 7 days exposure. A tribological approach was adopted estimate the long-term durability PSBM coating. Repeated cycles exposure A. maxima biomass subject coating stress continuous challenges. After several cycles, maintains higher efficacy than PMMA surface, suggesting stability high potential in photobioreactor applications.
