One equivalent of methanol-d4 reacts with the iridium(III)-carbonato-NHC complex [Ir(Cp*)(NHC-theo)(O2CO)] [1] containing an N-heterocyclic carbene ligand N-tethered C8-iodotheophylline group (NHC-theo) to form iridium(III) chelate [Ir(Cp*)(theophyllinato^NHC)I] [2] that bears a theophyllinato^NHC ligand, iodo and pentamethylcyclopentadienyl (Cp*). The solvent is oxidized formaldehyde-d2 was identified by detailed LC–MS study using 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) method. A plausible rearrangement involving unusual oxidative addition C8–I bond theophylline center give seven-coordinate iridium(V) intermediate supported density functional theory calculations.

A tridentate bis-NHC Pd complex, based on caffeine, was studied for its catalytic activity. This complex displayed a high activity in the Suzuki–Miyaura and Mizoroki–Heck cross-coupling reactions of aryl halides. The Sonogashira also investigated but reveals fast plateauing reaction. Aryl iodides as well bromides react when equipped with either electron-donating or electron-withdrawing substituents. chlorides, which contained groups, were reactive under applied conditions.

Abstract A series of protic N‐heterocyclic carbene ligand precursors based on theophylline or adenine has been prepared, and the reactivity coordination chemistry these proligands towards iridium(III) centers investigated. Complex formation appears to be highly dependent proligand structure. In one case, a particularly stable complex is formed that enables fully reversible protonation/deprotonation coordinated NHC moiety. The acidity constant protonated was consequently determined.
