Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with fluorescence emission have been widely studied for versatile applications, but facile tunability of the spectral properties CQDs by doping remains to be further explored. Herein, employing lanthanide ion Eu3+ as a dopant and activator, simple efficient synthesis route pure Eu-CQDs was demonstrated using N, N-dimethylformamide, oleic acid, oleylamine precursors carbon sources. In comparison, popular citric acid precursor, as-prepared exhibited an obviously smaller particle size (1.72 ± 0.29 nm) more uniform distribution. Through systematic optimization Eu-CQD system, colorful light emissions in visible range were first realized under excitation ultraviolet (UV) ∼360 nm promising application UV-triggered light-emitting diodes. Most interestingly, this solution UV-excited utilized visual pH sensor, experimentally featuring good repeatabilities stabilities (pH values switching between 7 14). Besides, highly sensitive detection characteristics Co (II) ions. Due overlapping, quenching efficiency is high 96.3%, limit obtained 0.139 μM, which much lower than maximum concentration drinking water permitted WHO. All these relevant results significantly demonstrate great potential multifunctionalization certain emerging applications like lighting, sensing, detection.
