Herein, a series of polylauryl methacrylate-grafted CDs (CDs-PLMA-m, m denotes the reaction time in hours) with core-shell structure were synthesized via surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). Due to good solubility PLMA hydrocarbons, all CDs-PLMA-m can be facilely dispersed polyalphaolefin (PAO) form pellucid colloidal dispersions. The reciprocating ball-on-plate sliding friction tests proved that addition 3.0 wt % CDs-PLMA-1 markedly lessened wear and PAO by 53.0 40.0%, respectively. tribological performances (3.0 %)/PAO dispersion did not attenuate sharply when duration extended from 20 200 min or applied load increased 100 N, revealing long lifetime desirable load-carrying effect CDs-PLMA-1. Based on tests, antifriction behavior was related synergies between molecular lubrication PLMA-1 brushes nanolubrication CDs. Furthermore, analyses disclosed deposition tribofilm composed lot spot iron oxides, which provided oxidation resistance an antiwear function. This study established reliable route synthesis oil-soluble polymer-grafted CDs, enabling high-efficiency PAO.

Liquid-like nanomaterials are emerging as unique nanolubricating materials due to their combined advantages of fluidity and nanoscale size. However, development application have been hindered by relatively complex synthesis processes. Herein, a one-step method for synthesizing liquid-like carbon dots (LCDs) was developed introducing ammonium salts into citric acid–based system. Compared solid (CDs) synthesized with acid, LCDs exhibit characteristics, which were further explored through molecular simulations. When used additives in lubricating grease, demonstrate excellent tribological performance, including friction reduction, antiwear properties, improved load-carrying capacity. This study not only introduces simple cost-effective strategy producing LCDs, advancing the CDs but also expands understanding grease.
