Water scarcity, contamination, and lack of sanitation are global issues that require innovations in chemistry, engineering, materials science. To tackle the challenge providing high-quality drinking water for a growing population, we need to develop high-performance multifunctional treat on both small large scales. As modern society science prioritize more sustainable engineering practices, treatment processes will use produced from resources via green chemical routes, combining multiple advanced properties such as high surface area great affinity contaminants. Lignin, one major components plants an abundant byproduct cellulose bioethanol industries, offers cost-effective scalable platform developing materials, with wide range physicochemical can be tailored improve their performance target applications. This review aims bridge current gap literature by exploring lignin, solid bulk or solubilized macromolecules nanolignin (nano)materials processes. We address application lignin-based macro-, micro-, nanostructured adsorption, catalysis, flocculation, membrane filtration processes, antimicrobial coatings composites. Throughout exploration recent progress trends this field, emphasize importance integrating principles chemistry sustainability advance technologies.
