The reduction of alkenes to their respective alkanes is one the most important transformations in organic chemistry, given abundance natural and commercial olefins. Metal-catalyzed hydrogenation common way reduce alkenes; however, use H2 gas combination with precious metals required for these conditions can be impractical, dangerous, expensive. More complex substrates often require extremely high pressures H2, further emphasizing safety concerns associated reactions. Here we report a safe, cheap, practical photochemical alkene using readily available organophotocatalyst, catalytic thiol, formate. These variety di-, tri-, tetra-substituted good yield as well dearomatize pharmaceutically relevant heterocycles generate sp3-rich isosteres benzofurans indoles. formal-hydrogenation tolerate broad range functionalities that would otherwise sensitive typical hydrogenations are likely industry applications.
