Element-hybrid phenolic aerogel composites are often utilized as lightweight thermal protection materials for aerospace craft. Zr-phenolic (Zr-PR) aerogels have been extensively studied due to their exceptional high-temperature resistance. However, the phase transformation of ZrO2, pyrolysis product Zr-PR, caused volume changes and internal stresses, greatly limiting application Zr-PR. In this work, a small amount nano-Y2O3 particles was directly doped into Zr-PR form nanoscale mosaic structure. This composite exhibited properties low density (0.51 g/cm3) conductivity (<0.151 W/(m K)); moreover, it showed significant improvement in oxidative ablation resistance with 33% reduction linear rate. The research indicated that doping effectively addressed adverse effects associated ZrO2 by situ rapidly forming (<60s) dense yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) barrier layer on surface, which significantly delayed thermal-oxidative composites. Additionally, pyrolytic carbon (PyC) surface can abundant multilayered graphene structures catalytic graphitization effect produced solid-solution reaction YSZ, further enhanced oxidation work provides simple efficient approach improve performance composites, broadening extreme environments.
