The reaction of copper nitrate, phthalic acid (1,2-H2BDC), and bipyridine in ammonia/ethanol media affords two multi-copper (II) cluster-based coordination polymers, namely {[Cu4(bpy)4(OH)2(BDC)2]·2OH·13H2O}n (USC-CP-6) {[Cu2(BDC)2(bpy)2(H2O)]·3H2O}n (USC-CP-7), under ambient conditions, with CP-6 forming at the bottom CP-7 upper edge same beaker. single-crystal structures reveal that it is a rare case gradient-induced formation different multi-copper(II) CPs within single-solution chemical reaction. crystallizes monoclinic system, sp. gr. P21/c, composed chair-like tetranuclear [Cu4(μ3-OH)2(bpy)4(BDC)2]2+ clusters as secondary building units, bridged by BDC2- ligands to form two-dimensional layer framework, while P21/n, binuclear [Cu2(1,2-BDC)2(bpy)2(H2O)] linked bridging one-dimensional looped double chain. Through intermolecular π-π stacking hydrogen bonds between water, lattice free oxygen atoms from carboxylate, both compounds yield 3D supramolecular structure.

A double-walled tetrahedral metal-organic cage assembled in solution from silver(I), 2-formyl-1,8-naphthyridine, halide, and a threefold-symmetric triamine. The AgI4 X clusters at its vertices each bring together six naphthyridine-imine moieties, leading to structure which eight tritopic ligands bridge four an (AgI4 X)4 L8 arrangement. Four form inner set of tetrahedron walls that are surrounded by the outer four. has significant interior volume, was observed bind anionic guests. also possesses external binding clefts, located edges cage, bound small aromatic Halide ions silver were exchange well-defined hierarchy, allowing modulation cavity volume. principles uncovered here may allow for increasingly more sophisticated cages with silver-cluster vertex architectures, post-assembly tuning volume enabling targeted behavior.
