In this study, the formation and emission of alkali halide cluster ions in charged droplets generated by electrospray ionization (ESI) was investigated using mass spectrometry (MS). We focus on ion at air–solution interface droplets, distinguishing between two mechanisms: evaporation model (IEM), where are released directly from interface, charge residue (CRM), after complete solvent evaporation. Using an iodide/chloride mixture, we analyzed how interfacial affinity influences composition cations anions. With knowledge that iodides have much higher affinities than chlorides, a relative faction iodide enables us to distinguish IEM CRM. Small anions exclusively containing suggested be IEM, while larger more chlorides expected This work clarifies distinctions CRM also establishes robust analytical approach for assessing ESI-MS, which may potentially enhance our understanding chemistry its implications atmospheric sciences.

The chemistry underlying biological homochirality remains challenging. We propose that noncovalent clusters may have served as the means by which an enantiomeric excess of one amino acid could direct other racemic acids toward homochiral biochemistry. Serine has long been known to exhibit a chiral preference when clustering form octamer; here, we extend this finding reporting effects nonzero e.e. serine on formation with well peptides, their covalent condensation products. show (i) enantiopure directs leucine and proline enantioselective dipeptide in water microdroplets (ii) likely intermediates are seen substituted octamer clusters. This work indicates relevance microdroplet sprays, e.g., natural aerosols, molecular homochirality.
