Silicones underpin an enormous range of simple and advanced technologies. Often, only small quantities silicone are used to enable a technology such that, on "per use" basis, one might suppose the environmental impact is low. However, preparation processes have very high carbon footprint, billions kg produced each year. To provide context consideration new strategies improve sustainability, we first outline traditional chemistry then describe degree which silicones green, sustainable circular. One strategy involves dilution oil or elastomer by tethering organic entities, particularly natural products, that may properties including facilitated degradation in nature at end-of-life. A greater focus given permit extensive reuse repurposing oils elastomers (e.g., with thermoplastic elastomers), before undergoes recycling. Each reuse, recycling step reduces net footprint. These mostly involve straightforward, high-yielding chemical work efficiently milieu. will eventually end up environment, where linear known rapidly degrade, when compared polymers. Alternative triggered biological and, more importantly elastomers, described, enzymatic composting.
