Abstract The processes of seafloor sediment transport from the Chukchi shelf to western Arctic basin were investigated using a pan‐Arctic sea ice‐ocean model and sediment‐trap measurements at four mooring stations: North Barrow Canyon, Hanna Northwind Abyssal Plain, Plain. available data verified that sinking flux lithogenic material (LM) originally resuspended for 2010–2020 was simulated reasonably well in areas. results analyzed quantify spatiotemporal variability LM reveal its background mechanisms. Analysis indicated Canyon throughflow, Slope Current (CSC), mesoscale eddies played important roles redistribution. CSC controlled westward mouth Borderland. generated north efficiently transported shelf‐origin toward southern Canada Basin. particulate organic carbon (POC) averaged September 2010 August 2020, which estimated statistically flux, 0.13–0.30 gC m −2 yr −1 200‐m depth This finding reveals lateral bottom has considerable effect on POC basin, suggests marine biogeochemical cycle is strongly influenced by shelf‐basin exchange depends relative strength eddy activity.

Despite the lack of local anthropogenic mercury sources, methylated (MeHg) concentrations in Arctic biota are higher than from lower latitudes. The main entry route occurs during bioconcentration seawater monomethylmercury (MMHg) into phytoplankton. known seasonal changes biological activity region, little is about cycling total (THg) and MeHg Ocean. Here, we report THg sampled northwestern Barents Sea water column late winter spring. In upper 500 m, significantly spring (0.64 ± 0.09 pmol L-1) compared to (0.53 0.07 L-1), driven by inputs surface waters atmospheric deposition dynamics changing sea ice conditions. Contrastingly, were (41 39 fmol (85 42 L-1). We suggest that most biotically demethylated both phytoplankton bacteria, with additional losses photodemethylation evasion. Our observations highlight importance demethylation potential uptake methylmercury coinciding bloom. Lastly, use our new data together previously published region construct a simplified cycle an marginal zone.

The GEOTRACES program has greatly expanded measurements of trace elements, which serve as key nutrients, harmful contaminants, and tracers ocean processes past conditions. Many elements tend to associate with particulate matter, been particularly valuable for growing our understanding this fraction. Focusing on the micronutrient iron an example, data demonstrate that majority in is particulate. Chemically labile iron, likely available biological use, also often more abundant than dissolved forms, near continents deep sea. This highlights need consider fraction conceptual numeric models. Direct comparisons particle-sampling methods highlight both abundance small particles (<0.45–0.8 μm), whose biogeochemical roles are still poorly known, difficulty consistently capturing large, faster-sinking particles. In situ pumps 0.8 μm filters capture less bottle-collected samples filtered onto 0.45 filters, but they can material some sources. datasets contain nearly sevenfold measurements, ongoing efforts pair these needed order fully understand cycles other important elements.
