After a period of relative stability, the Antarctic sea ice extent has abruptly decreased in 2016 and remained low since then. Both atmospheric oceanic processes likely contributed to this drop but many questions remain regarding underlying dynamics it is unknown if unprecedented. Here we produce new multi-variate spatial reconstruction covering 1958–2023 show that similar occurred at end 1970s, albeit with smaller magnitude. drops patterns, higher loss East sector than West where variability strongly modulated by wind-driven changes. The ocean integrates forcing provides memory amplifies magnitude both drops. then, 1970s magnitude, which due forcing, according results from 1958 2023.
