The classification of stream flow regimes has been a subject study for over half century in the fields hydrology, geomorphology, ecology, and water resources management. But with most recent Supreme Court decision on jurisdictional Waters United States (WOTUS) 2023 Conforming Rule, answer to question which waters are relatively permanent increased importance urgency. One state where this is salient Arizona, approximately 95% its streams nonperennial. In study, we use long-term (>30 years) daily discharge records from Arizona assess semi-natural arid within context Rule. Using percentile distributions, distinguished permanency—ephemeral vs. intermittent perennial—for 70 reaches distributed throughout state. Ephemeral had median 0 cms 75th permanence less than 25% (i.e., 3 months every 7.5 out 10 years). On other end spectrum, perennial 90th 100%. middle, greater We also assessed effect megadrought (since 1994) permanency. As result megadrought, four transitioned intermittent, ephemeral, one became ephemeral. present here specific but could be useful regions seeking typical year.
