Abstract Most iron (Fe) dissolved in seawater is complexed to organic ligands of unknown composition. Here we investigate the distribution siderophores, small compounds synthesized by microbes bind environmental Fe and facilitate its transport into cell. Siderophores help relieve Fe‐stress enhance microbial production under Fe‐deficient conditions. were found at all stations sampled across a section eastern North Tropical Pacific Oceans visited GEOTRACES GP15 expedition. In surface waters chronically Fe‐limited Subpolar Gyre, Fe‐marinobactin Fe‐amphibactin siderophore concentrations reached 66 pM accounted for up 80% Fe. Ferrioxamine/ferrichrome‐like including ferricrocin, abundant near Alaskan coast. Metal‐free Al‐siderophores also indicating rapid active Fe‐siderophore uptake. Fe‐acquisition via siderophores common strategy inhabiting upper ocean likely supplies large fraction bioavailable‐Fe regions.
