Many mental health problems stem from negative life experiences. Memories of such experiences are not only distressing in and themselves, but may also contaminate existing autobiographical memory networks. To date, little is known about the modifiability previously formed episodic memories, particularly their affective valence. investigate this, we developed Modification Of Valence In Episodes (MOVIE) paradigm, modelling rich memories with high experimental control. Abstract Background The impact of exclusion (affiliation-loss) events is theorized to be painful and personally meaningful, especially in social anxiety. However, specific data on the autobiographical anxiety scarce. To fill this gap, we conducted two studies. Methods Participants (Study 1: N = 246; Study 2: 273), including varying levels subclinical anxiety, recalled events. participants reported several indices events’ impact: emotional intensity, post-traumatic distress, centrality event person’s life story, cognitions concerning perceived affiliation status following 2). Results We hypothesized found that relates enhanced controlling for depressive symptoms centrality. Based dual sensitivity (Gilboa-Schechtman, et al., 2024), predicted association with distress will mediated by status-related cognitions. status-, but not affiliation-related cognitions, mediate distress. Conclusions Exclusion appear linked heightened post-event particularly among individuals high Event may partially explain association, pointing potential directions future research therapeutic exploration.
