Although viral sequences are important in taxonomy, classification has typically also required biological properties, thus excluding viruses that were identified by metagenomics. The proposals this Consensus Statement, which supported the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), enable discovered sequence alone to be incorporated into virus classification. number and diversity metagenomic data far exceeds experimentally characterized isolates. Abstract Marine viruses are key drivers of host diversity, population dynamics and biogeochemical cycling contribute to the daily flux billions tons organic matter. Despite recent advancements in metagenomics, much their biodiversity remains uncharacterized. Here we report a data set 27,346 marine virome contigs that includes 44 complete genomes. These outnumber all currently known phage genomes habitats include members previously uncharacterized lineages. We designed new method for prediction based on co-occurrence associations reveals these infect dominant microbiome such as Prochlorococcus Pelagibacter . A negative association between abundance virus-to-host ratio supports recently proposed Piggyback-the-Winner model reduced lysis at higher densities. An analysis patterns throughout oceans revealed how viral communities adapt various seasonal, temperature photic regimes according targeted hosts diversity auxiliary metabolic genes.
