Abstract Despite extensive evidence on the roles of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and REM sleep in memory processing, a comprehensive model that integrates their complementary functions remains elusive due to lack mechanistic understanding REM’s role offline processing. We present Refining Rescuing (RnR) Hypothesis, which posits principal function is increase signal-to-noise ratio within across representations. As such, selectively enhances essential nodes representation while inhibiting majority (Refine). Additionally, modulates weak strong representations so they fall similar range recallability (Rescue). Across multiple NREM-REM cycles, tuning individual traces get sharpened, allowing for integration shared features hypothesize sleep’s unique cellular, neuromodulatory, electrophysiological milieu, marked by greater inhibition mixed autonomic state both sympathetic parasympathetic activity, underpins these processes. The RnR Hypothesis offers unified framework explains diverse behavioral neural outcomes associated with sleep, paving way future research more sleep-dependent cognitive functions.

Biological memory is known to be flexible—memory formation and recall depend on factors such as the behavioral context of organism. However, this property often ignored in associative models, leaving it unclear how memories can organized recalled when subject contextual control. Because lack a rigorous analytical framework, also unknown control affects stability, storage capacity, information content. Here, we bring dynamic nature fore by introducing novel model memory, which refer context-modular network. In our model, stored patterns are associated one several background network states, or contexts. Memories accessible their corresponding active, otherwise inaccessible. Context modulates effective connectivity imposing specific configuration neuronal synaptic gating—gated neurons (synapses) have activity (weights) momentarily silenced, thereby reducing interference from belonging other Memory randomly independently chosen, while gates may selected optimized through process refinement. Through analytic numerical results, show that networks exhibit both improved capacity differential stability with random gating (especially for gating). For refinement, devise method synapses gated off given if they destabilize context, drastically improving enabling even more precise over stability. Notably, refinement allows multiple contexts, stabilizing weight matrices alone do not contain any about patterns, Gaussian matrices. Overall, integrates recent ideas context-dependent organization classic models proposes theory act framework future work. Furthermore, work carries important implications understanding biological brain, highlighting an intriguing trade-off between accessibility. Published American Physical Society 2025
