Summary The question of whether obesity should be regarded as a disease remains controversial. One source controversy can addressed by distinguishing between two ways in which the word “obesity” is used. In medicine, now typically refers to some or all set interrelated dysfunctions metabolism, adipose tissue, and dietary intake regulation. other contexts, such government‐funded public education programs, body mass index (BMI) category taken indicate excess fat. result that when medical experts say, “Obesity disease,” majority outside medicine inevitably takes this mean “being fat disease.” order address ambiguity, we apply key philosophical accounts different senses “obesity.” We draw major conclusions: First, although understood clinical meets criteria considered disease, defined BMI does not. Second, adequately addressing requires us distinguish it clearly unambiguously from high BMI. Making distinction would help both policymakers better understand obesity, facilitating advances prevention treatment.
