Energy infrastructure requires metals, and metals production energy. A transparent, physical model of the metals-energy system is presented to explore under what conditions this dependence constrains or accelerates transition a net-zero economy. While mineral (as high as 340 Mt yr −1 iron ore, 210 limestone, 250 bauxite 5.5 Gt copper ore in 2040–2050 decade, assuming no improvements) total energy (up 22 EJ ) requirements for building low-carbon are significant, it compares favourably with current extraction use supporting fossil fuel (15 minerals ~38 ). There levers significantly reduce material associated impacts over time. The industry can play key reinforcing role by adapting increasing supply renewable electricity. Specifically, direct electrolysis extract metal from close thermodynamic limit, make efficient low-C unique features emerging technologies extraction, molten oxide sulphide considered evolving system. Electrification enables elegant separations provides pathway build out while reducing environmental impacts, though efficiency measures will still be crucial meet 2050 carbon budgets.
