Nitrogen cycling in freshwater ecosystems is critical for maintaining water quality, and understanding the processes of nitrification denitrification essential effective nitrogen management, particularly areas with diverse pollution sources. This study investigated three tributaries Jinjing River—Tuojia (agricultural), (residential), Guanjia (woodland)—during both wet dry seasons. The potential rates (PNRs) (PDNRs) were measured across these sites. highest observed Tuojia during season, PNR reaching 39.7 μg·kg−1 h−1 PDNR 3.25 mg·kg−1·h−1, while considerably lower Guanjia. ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) abundance was higher than bacteria (AOB) at all sites, exhibiting AOA (5.9 × 10⁷ copies·g−1) season. nitrate-nitrogen (NO₃−-N) content a key factor influencing denitrification, significantly correlated (r = 0.69; p < 0.05). These findings highlight spatial seasonal variability emphasize importance developing targeted management strategies regions mixed land uses
