Abstract Functional overlap among species (redundancy) is considered important in shaping competitive and mutualistic interactions that determine how communities respond to environmental change. Most studies view functional redundancy as static, yet traits within species—which ultimately shape redundancy—can vary over seasonal or spatial gradients. We therefore have limited understanding of trait turnover between could lead changes loss differentially impact depending on where when the occur space time. Using an Arctic bumblebee community a case study, 1277 individual measures from 14 three annual seasons, we quantified inter‐ intraspecific body‐size compared with elevation season. Coupling every their plant visitation, investigated grouping individuals by morphological identity altered our assessment network structure this differed Finally, tested sensitivity time simulating extinction nodes representing either similarity traditional groups. This allowed us explore degree which trait‐based groups increase decrease interaction relative species‐based nodes. found (i) taxonomically morphologically similar bees turn independently each other, being larger season; (ii) networks composed versus were structured differently; (iii) simulated bee caused faster coextinction flowering plants than taxonomic lost. Crucially, magnitude these effects varied time, highlighting importance considering spatiotemporal context studying contributions architecture. Abstract Questions Pollen traits (e.g., size, wall thickness, number of apertures) have been suggested to be relevant in terms pollination mechanisms and the ability male gametophyte withstand desiccation. We examined spatiotemporal distribution pollen related dispersal (ornamentation unit) desiccation tolerance (wall presence furrows pores size). Specifically, we address two questions: how are distributed relation different levels aridity? And, did trait composition change with changing past environmental conditions? Location Laurel forests La Gomera Tenerife (Canary Islands). Methods used rain from 19 forest plots on an elevational gradient 1050 m all laurel types (cold, dry, humid ridge crest) quantify using community‐weighted means. In addition, fossil examine over 9600 years response known intervals regional climate change. Results Our results demonstrated increased prevalence tolerance‐related drier areas distribution. also found rich grain ornamentation core Holocene functional diversity during a trend towards conditions as proportion grains apertures thicker walls indicate tolerance. Conclusions study provides first step understanding role when quantifying dynamics plant communities.

This study examines seed germination strategies and seedling establishment in six tree species typical of seasonally dry tropical forests. We focused on how interspecific intraspecific differences size speed influence biomass allocation growth. Using generalized linear models, we analyzed the effects these traits root/shoot ratios growth rates. Our findings reveal two main strategies: slow germination, high ratio, low rate

Abstract In recent decades, research on biodiversity in community ecology has been marked by the consideration of species' evolutionary histories and functional traits. Among different spatial levels at which or phylogenetic (hereafter FP) diversity can be quantified, definition general concept between‐community (β) given less attention than that local, within‐community (α) regional, merged‐community (γ) diversities. Here, we develop a new method for partitioning FP β into elementary components to determine how why differs from species diversity, with latter reflecting only differences abundances between communities. As reference example, consider two distinct measures diversity: Rao's dissimilarity coefficient ( Q ), expresses average communities, its transformation E effective number Through analytical simulations, show are connected differently typical patterns structure. The search ecological processes drive assembly assessment resilience stability have indeed revealed structures: local clustering similar traits shared regional presence functionally phylogenetically redundant versus unique species. We while both increasing functions γ uniqueness, increases clustering, α redundancy. also component included formula allows detection an overall trend overdispersion dataset without need use null models. To facilitate secure selection index study, call, through our development formal precise definitions light concepts redundancy uniqueness. particular, call further when should increase clustering.
