Abstract To better understand and address global human–environment crises, interdisciplinary collaborations across the natural social sciences have become increasingly common in conservation. Within such collaborations, question of scale can cause tensions: how to agree on unit measurement analysis? We contend there is value scrutinizing relationship between interdisciplinarity more closely. Drawing 2 research projects Indonesia that integrate cultural anthropology conservation biology, we focused these navigated questions scale. sought illustrate choices should be understood as situated context accelerating drive up science practice impact. Abstract Forest restoration can potentially contribute to multiple global sustainable development goals. Yet, little is known about the factors associated with local actors' choice engage in restoration, limiting of effective scaling strategies. Our study examines spatial socio‐ecological landowners' engagement forest documented by Atlantic Restoration Pact Brazil. We draw on Diffusion Innovations theory model associations between and explanatory variables among 222,000 private properties Forest. Properties highest cattle densities were 163.9% more likely be restored (95% CI: 131.1%–201.3%) than those lowest. Large had a 120.0% higher probability 90.9%–153.5%) medium ones. Compared reference levels, cover (in 2010) ambiguous, but greater loss (1990–2010) 9.0% less −12.5% −5.3%). water bodies 22.2% 8.9%–37.1%), while upland 46.6% 32.3%–57.8%), ruggedness 12.4%–30.9%). Longer travel times urban areas reduced likelihood 48.3% 39.7%–55.8%). road distance quantile 11.1% 0.1%–23.2%). High management levels 52.6% 15.5%–73.6%), densely populated increased it 53.8% 35.6%–74.4%). wealthier municipalities (54.7%, 95% CI 10.8%–116.4%). Landowners' decision‐making appears responsive legislative requirements (on minimum afforestation around waterbodies), underscoring their value for promoting restoration. Commercial landowners might have incentives restore or selectively targeted organisations, risking marginalisation smallholders poorer from agendas.
