Psychology and neuroscience are concerned with the study of behavior, internal cognitive processes, their neural foundations. However, most laboratory studies use constrained experimental settings that greatly limit range behaviors can be expressed. While focusing on restricted ensures methodological control, it risks impoverishing object study: by restricting we might miss key aspects function. In this article, argue psychology should increasingly adopt innovative designs, measurement methods, analysis techniques sophisticated computational models to probe rich, ecologically valid forms including social behavior. We discuss challenges studying rich behavior as well novel opportunities offered state-of-the-art methodologies new sensing technologies, highlight importance developing formal models. exemplify our arguments reviewing some recent streams research in psychology, other fields (e.g., sports analytics, ethology robotics) have addressed a model-based manner. hope these "success cases" will encourage psychologists neuroscientists extend toolbox behavioral – them processes they engage.

The human ability to effortlessly understand the actions of other people has been focus research in cognitive neuroscience for decades. What have we learned about this ability, and what open questions remain? In Element authors address these by considering kinds information an observer may gain when viewing action. A 'what, how, why' framing organises evidence theories representations that support classifying action; how way action is performed supports observational learning inferences people; actor's intentions are inferred from her actions. Background: Approach and avoidance bias (AAB) describes automatic behavioral tendencies to react toward environmental stimuli regarding their emotional valence. Traditional setups have provided evidence but often lack ecological validity. The study of the AAB in naturalistic contexts has recently increased, revealing significant methodological challenges. This systematic review evaluates use virtual reality (VR) real-world AAB, summarizing innovations Methods: We systematically reviewed peer-reviewed articles employing VR investigate AAB. analyzed experimental designs, stimuli, response metrics, technical aspects assess alignment with research objectives identify limitations. Results: included 14 studies diverse methodologies, stimulus types, novel responses, highlighting variability design strategies coherence. Several used traditional reaction time measures yet varied application technology participant interaction paradigms. Some showed discrepancies between simulated natural bodily actions, while others showcased more integrated approaches that preserved integrity. Only a minority control conditions or acquired (neuro)physiological data. Conclusions: offers potential setup for studying enabling dynamic immersive interactions. Our results underscore importance establishing coherent framework investigating using VR.
