Abstract Past and present anthropogenic mercury (Hg) release to ecosystems causes neurotoxicity cardiovascular disease in humans with an estimated economic cost of $117 billion USD annually. Humans are primarily exposed Hg via the consumption contaminated freshwater marine fish. The UNEP Minamata Convention on aims curb environment is accompanied by global monitoring efforts track its success. biogeochemical cycle a complex cascade release, dispersal, transformation bio-uptake processes that link sources exposure. Global change interacts impacting physical, ecological factors control these processes. In this review we examine how such as biome shifts, deforestation, permafrost thaw or ocean stratification will alter cycling Based past declines environmental levels, expect future policy impacts should be distinguishable from effects at regional scales.

Heavy metal ions and antibiotic contamination have become a major environmental concern worldwide. The development of efficient recognition strategies these pollutants at ultra-low concentrations in aqueous solutions as well the elucidation intrinsic sensing mechanism are challenging tasks. In this work, unique luminescent Ln-MOF materials (NIIC-3-Ln) were assembled by rational ligand design. Among them, NIIC-3-Tb demonstrated highly selective luminescence quenching response toward Hg

Fish consumption is the primary dietary route of human exposure to methylmercury. It has been well documented that elevated mercury concentration in fish North America and Europe linked anthropogenic emissions. China world's largest producer, consumer, emitter mercury, as commercial producer consumer. Although pollution currently receiving much attention worldwide, its status remains largely unknown. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis on total concentrations marine freshwater samples, covering 35,464 samples collected over past 30 years. found that, opposite increasing emission contamination events, levels have gradually decreased The results were sharp contrast those Europe. significantly anticorrelated with catch aquaculture inverse trophic levels. Understanding microplastic exposure and effects is critical to understanding risk. Here, we used large, in-lake closed-bottom mesocosms investigate on pelagic freshwater ecosystems. This article provides details about the experimental design results transport of microplastics organisms. Our experiment included three polymers (PE, PS, PET) ranging in density size. Nominal concentrations ranged from 0 29,240 per liter a log scale. Mesocosms enclosed natural microbial, phytoplankton, zooplankton communities yellow perch (Perca flavescens). We quantified characterized water column components food web (biofilm walls, zooplankton, fish). The stratified vertically according size density. ABSTRACT In the past decade, China has motivated proactive emission control measures that have successfully reduced emissions of many air pollutants. For atmospheric mercury, which is a globally transported neurotoxin, much less known about long-term changes in its concentrations and anthropogenic China. this study, over decade continuous observations at four Chinese sites show gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) continuously increased until early 2010s, followed by significant declines rates 1.8%–6.1% yr−1 2022. The GEM decline from 2013 to 2022 (by 38.6% ± 12.7%) coincided with decreasing criteria pollutants were larger than those observed elsewhere northern hemisphere (5.7%–14.2%). co-benefits contributed Hg led We estimated 38%–50% (116–151 tons) using machine-learning relationship models.

Water column hypoxia is a key process influencing methylmercury (MeHg) production and availability in waterbodies worldwide. During seasonal destratification, large, short-lived pulses of aqueous MeHg may be released into the subsequently mixed water column, but little known about fate these pulses, particularly whether there are concomitant increases uptake aquatic food webs. We examined magnitude timing across several trophic guilds relative to reservoir stratification status using biweekly mercury data from water, zooplankton, fish (Bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus Smallmouth Bass, Micropterus dolomieu). Zooplankton concentrations increased by up 250% during concurrent with concentrations. filter-passing were positively correlated when was (R2 = 0.95) destratifying 0.57) not while stratified 0.21). Mercury adult bluegill juveniles both species 20–70% following responses lagging 4–8 weeks behind those zooplankton MeHg. piscivorous bass varied over course study. Our findings demonstrate responsiveness webs availability, suggesting that could play an important role biotic exposure within downstream reservoirs.

SignificanceRussian rivers are the predominant source of riverine mercury to Arctic Ocean, where methylmercury biomagnifies high levels in food webs. Pollution controls thought have decreased late-20th-century loading watersheds, but there no published long-term observations on Russian rivers. Here, we present a unique hydrochemistry dataset determine trends river particulate concentrations and fluxes recent decades. Using hydrologic deposition modeling together with multivariate time series analysis, that 70 90% declines were driven by pollution reductions sedimentation reservoirs.
