Diorama: An Effective Approach to Reduce Social Withdrawal Behavior in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder

Children
diagnosed
with
moderate
autism
spectrum
disorder
(MASD)
exhibit
a
range
of
socially
unacceptable
behaviors,
which
notably
include
social
withdrawal
behavior
(SWB);
these
individuals
tend
to
disengage
from
various
contexts,
consequently
impeding
their
communication
and
interaction
capabilities.
The
primary
objective
this
research
was
employ
miniatures
(diorama)
as
methodological
approach
construct
semi-naturalistic
scenarios
for
children
MASD
that
authentically
represent
quotidian
experiences
facilitate
interaction,
contributing
the
alleviation
SWB.
sample
comprised
21
MASD,
aged
between
6
9
years,
who
were
enrolled
at
Al-Jabr
Institute
in
Al-Ahsa,
Saudi
Arabia.
A
quasi-experimental
methodology
adopted
align
research's
inherent
characteristics,
using
three-group
design.
instruments
utilized
included
Social
Withdrawal
Behavior
Scale
(SWBS)
alongside
training
program
devised
by
authors.
results
showed
significant
reduction
SWB
among
those
whom
diorama
applied.
Results
also
indicated
continuation
effect
after
end
period
two
consecutive
months.

further
implementation
on
more
extensive
samples
across
broader
geographic
scope
within
Arabia,
thereby
facilitating
generalization

population

Abstract
Background:
The
field
of
autism
research
in
adults
has
not
yet
emerged
Arab
countries,
which
is
part
due
to
the
lack
valid,
reliable
measures.
The
objectives
this
study
were
assess
psychometric
properties
abridged
version
autism-spectrum
quotient
(AQ-28)
a
sample
non-clinical
Arabic-speaking
adults.
Methods:
Adults
aged
over
18
years
from
general
population
Lebanon
(N=1076,
mean
age
27.90±11.81
years,
63.8%
females)
recruited
online,
using
snowball
sampling
technique.
Results:
In
terms
factorial
validity,
original
five-factor
model
AQ-28
was
replicate
with
an
acceptable
internal
consistency.
Measurement
invariance
established
across
sex.
Mean
sum
scores
observed
male
participants
significantly
higher
than
those
displayed
by
females.
Autistic
traits
as
measured
Arabic
correlated
negatively
secure
attachment
and
positively
loneliness,
depression
anxiety.
Conclusion:
This
makes
major
contribution
international
literature
on
validating,
for
first
time,
into
Arabic.
It
our
hope
that
scale
will
help
galvanize
efforts
better
understand
nature
etiology
broader
phenotype
cultures.
