The maternal microbiome is emerging as an important factor that influences the neurological health of mothers and their children. Recent studies highlight how microbial communities in gut can shape early-life development ways inform long-term trajectories. Research on neurodevelopmental effects microbiomes expanding our understanding microbiome-gut-brain axis to include signaling across maternal-offspring unit during perinatal period. In this Review, we synthesize existing literature modulates brain function behavior both developing offspring. We present evidence from human animal showing interacts with environmental factors impact risk for abnormalities. further discuss molecular cellular mechanisms facilitate crosstalk neuromodulation. Finally, consider advancing these complex interactions could lead microbiome-based interventions promoting offspring health.

Background: The impact of the SARS-CoV-2 viral infection during pregnancy on fetus can be direct—transmitted through placenta—and indirect—creating unfavorable conditions for development because inflammation, micro-thrombosis, and hypercoagulation. Our study aimed to determine types frequency pathohistological changes in placental tissue SARS-CoV-2-positive pregnant women examine possible role oxidative stress prognosis delivery its maternal fetal complications. Methods: This prospective clinical included 50 divided into two groups, positive (COVID-19 group) negative (control group), from who we collected demographic, clinical, obstetric, biochemical pathologic data. Data about newborn characteristics were also collected, which anamnestic, Results: values superoxide anion radical index lipid peroxidation significantly different mothers concerning presence infection, while levels nitric oxide, peroxidation, reduced glutathione, dismutase newborns depending infection. Newborn similar between groups except concentrations IgM antibody. incidence FVM type COVID-19 group was 46%, control group, 18%. Conclusions: confirmed significant parameters stress-mediated dysfunction. Future studies should performed with more participants follow-up neonatal development.

Previous cross-sectional studies have investigated social determinants of health (SDOH) among pregnant women with COVID-19. However, there are scant data on the impact these maternal outcomes from cohorts We evaluated association between and both COVID-19 severity adverse pregnancy (APOs) in a cohort Los Angeles (L.A.) County, California. The APOs considered were fetal loss, gestational hypertensive disorders, prolonged rupture membranes, death. recruited confirmed SARS-CoV-2 collected severity, trimester at diagnosis, comorbidities, mode delivery, vaccination, APOs, age, medical insurance type, race/ethnicity, neighborhood income. Participants who obese more likely to experience severe (OR: 3.61, 95% CI: 1.44–9.46), while even one vaccine dose before infection was associated reduced odds disease (OR:0.14, 0.02–0.52). Pregnant participants living low-income areas (p = 0.01) 0.009). This suggests that economic inequities could negatively also found SDOH moderated effects Black vs. non-Black women. These findings underscore importance considering improve health.

Introduction Pregnant individuals have an increased risk of severe illness from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. Vaccination is effective strategy to prevent and complications for pregnant individuals. are often excluded research remain hesitant receive vaccination against COVID-19. It pivotal study factors related vaccine uptake hesitancy among We studied barriers facilitators choice motivation regarding COVID-19 during pregnancy aid future in their decision vaccinate various infectious agents. Methods In this qualitative study, were interviewed between October 2021 January 2022 using a semi-structured approach. A topic list was used explore feelings, perceptions ideas pregnancy. Interviews transcribed verbatim thematic analyses performed MAX QDA. Results After nine interviews, saturation reached. Three main themes identified that influenced vaccination: health consequences, ambiguity information societal motivation. Health consequences mainly concerned the effect offspring, unknown long-term effects vaccination. The advice Dutch institute Public Environment changed not vaccinating after release developed vaccine, routinely all data available United States America (USA). This change policy fuelled doubt confusion Arguments favor social perspective specific behaviour rules restrictions due pandemic. E.g. without people unable travel abroad having take test every time entering public place. Conclusion need clear, unambiguous concerning short- long-term, particularly decision-making process Additionally, needs be addressed. Besides aforementioned themes, general counselling should focus on misperceptions safety role misinformation which also important non-pregnant population. underlines importance including programs obtain targeted needs.

Severe infection has associated heightened immune system activation gastrointestinal symptoms. may also result dysbiosis compromised intestinal mucosal barrier, often referred to as 'leaky gut'. Increased permeability facilitates passage inflammatory cytokines, originating from inflamed mucosa gut, into bloodstream, thereby influencing fetal development during pregnancy potentially elevating risk such autism schizophrenia. current discusses role cytokine signaling molecules, microglia, synaptic pruning, highlighting their potential involvement following infection. Additionally, this addresses probiotic interventions mitigate responses offering avenues for future optimizing outcomes.
