BACKGROUND Multiparametric remote measurement technologies (RMTs), which comprise smartphones and wearable devices, have the potential to revolutionize understanding of etiology trajectory major depressive disorder (MDD). Engagement with RMTs in MDD research is utmost importance for validity predictive analytical methods long-term use can be conceptualized as both objective engagement (data availability) subjective (system usability experiential factors). Positioning design user interfaces within theoretical framework Behavior Change Wheel help maximize effectiveness. In-app components containing information from credible sources, visual feedback, access support provide an opportunity promote while minimizing team resources. Randomized controlled trials are gold standard quantifying effects in-app on patients MDD. OBJECTIVE This study aims evaluate whether a multiparametric RMT system theoretically informed notifications, progress tracking, contact details could symptom tracking over above usual. We hypothesized that participants using adapted app (intervention group) would higher monitoring, measured by engagement. METHODS A 2-arm, parallel-group randomized trial (participant-blinded) 1:1 randomization was conducted 100 12 weeks. Participants arms used RADAR-base system, comprising smartphone weekly assessments Fitbit device continuous passive tracking. intervention arm (n=50, 50%) also had additional components. The primary outcome engagement, percentage questionnaires completed during follow-up. secondary outcomes usability, emotional self-awareness). RESULTS levels completion Patient Health Questionnaire-8 (PHQ-8) were similar between control (67/97, 69%) (66/97, 68%) (P value difference arms=.83, 95% CI −9.32 11.65). group reported slightly (1.93, −1.91 5.78), self-awareness (1.13, −2.93 5.19), (2.29, −5.93 10.52) scores than at follow-up; however, all CIs wide included 0. Abstract The global incidence of chronic diseases is rising, posing substantial social and economic challenges. These conditions necessitate effective long-term self-care, which can be supported by digital interventions using remote measurement technologies, like smartphones wearables. This systematic review investigates the motivational strategies within technologies to improve self-care adherence for illnesses, particularly cardiovascular diabetes mellitus. A literature search was conducted, focusing on studies from 2004 2024. total 17 met inclusion criteria. reviewed targeted medication adherence, lifestyle modifications, symptom tracking. Findings suggest that strategies, such as feedback, health literacy, reminders, messages, goal-setting, interaction, gamification, rewards patient behaviors. However, their effectiveness relies theoretical grounding, data-driven features, personalization. Future research should prioritize integrating robust theories developing standardized metrics enhance reliability impact interventions.
