The long-term collective welfare of humanity may lie in the hands those who are presently living. But do people normatively feel concern for and include future generations their moral circles? Five studies conducted on Prolific Academic (NTotal=1,652) find evidence a progressive decline subjective standing generations, demonstrating decreasing perceived obligation, concern, prosocial intentions towards other with increasing temporal distance. While participants generally tend to display present-oriented preferences, we also reveal individual differences that mitigate this tendency predict pro-future outcomes, including variation longtermism beliefs vividness one’s imagination. Our reconcile conflicting extant literature judgment future-thinking, shed light role distance circle expansion, offer practical implications better valuing safeguarding shared humanity.

Abstract In three studies ( N = 8775) including two pre‐registered experiments and a cross‐national replication across five countries, we tested whether intergenerational appeals that emphasize our responsibility to protect future generations can expand moral circle include distant people within the boundaries of regard. Crises and global challenges are pervasive in contemporary politics societies worldwide. Climate change, economic recessions, humanitarian crises, health emergencies, wars international conflicts put tremendous pressure on the functioning of democratic political systems other government models. Is the certainty of saving a life today worth more than less-certain possibility 10 lives tomorrow? In six pre-registered studies with U.S. samples from Prolific ( N = 5,095), we employed an intergenerational probability discounting task, discovering people discount value as uncertainty and distance present increase.
