A series of novel star-shaped ionic liquid crystals (ILCs) compounds with various counterions (derived from HBF4, HPF6, CF3COOH, d-MH-SO3H, H3PO4, p-Toluenesulfonic acid) were designed and synthesised starting precursors pyridines crystalline monomer cholesteryl 4-bromobutanoate. The synthesis and characterization of novel ionic liquid crystals based on pyridinium salts with Br− PF6− counterions are described in this work. These were derived from 4-hydroxypyridine, both by N- O-alkylation. 3,4,5-tri(alkyloxy)-benzyl mesogenic unit was attached to the nitrogen atom ring. Alkyl chains a different number carbon atoms (6, 8, 10, 12 14) employed order show effect stability mesophase. POM (polarizing optical microscopy) XRD (powder X-ray diffraction) studies indicated that bromide shorter C6, C8 C10 do not mesomorphic properties, while longer chain analogues C12 C14 exhibit two enantiotropic columnar phases.
