Carbon dots (CDs), a kind of carbon material discovered accidentally, exhibit unexpected advantages in fluorescence imaging/sensing such as photostability, biocompatibility, and low toxicity. For emerging theranostics, an interdiscipline created by integrating therapy diagnostics, CDs are good candidates when they combined with targeted chemo/gene/photodynamic/photothermal therapeutic moieties. Here, the development nanomedicine is reviewed from their use original imaging agents and/or drug carriers to multifunctional theranostic systems. Finally, challenges prospects next-generation CD-based theranostics for clinical applications also discussed.

Measuring pH in living cells is of great importance for better understanding cellular functions as well providing pivotal assistance early diagnosis diseases. In this work, we report the first use a novel kind label-free carbon dots intracellular ratiometric fluorescence sensing. By simple one-pot hydrothermal treatment citric acid and basic fuchsin, showing dual emission bands at 475 545 nm under single-wavelength excitation were synthesized. It demonstrated that intensities as-synthesized two emissions are pH-sensitive simultaneously. The intensity ratio (I475 nm/I545 nm) linear against values from 5.2 to 8.8 buffer solution, affording capability probes also displays show excellent reversibility photostability measurements. With nanoprobe, quantitative imaging using detection successfully applied HeLa cells. contrast most reported nanomaterials-based sensors which rely on attachment additional dyes, these carbon-dots-based low toxicity, easy synthesize, free labels.

Currently cancer treatment is in large part non-specific with respect to treatment. Medication often harsh on patients, whereby they suffer several undesired side effects as a result. Carbon-based nanoparticles have attracted attention recent years due their ability act platform for the attachment of drugs and/or ligands. Relatively simple models are used research, wherein carbon conjugated ligand that specific an overexpressed receptor imaging and drug delivery These confer unique properties or vehicle nontoxic nature high fluorescence qualities. Chief among ongoing research within carbon-based emerge dots (C-dots) nanotubes (CNTs). In this review, aforementioned will be discussed use doxorubicin gemcitabine based vehicles, well ligand-mediated targeted therapy. Further directions current field also discussed.

Among various cancers, pediatric brain tumors represent the most common cancer type in children and second cause of related deaths. Anticancer drugs therapies, such as doxorubicin (Dox), have severe side effects on patients during chemotherapy, especially for their bodies are still under development. These believed to be due lack a delivery system with high efficacy targeting selectivity, resulting serious damages normal cells. To improve transferrin (Trans) receptor mediated endocytosis can utilized drug design, receptors expressed blood barrier (BBB) often over tumor Carbon dots (C-Dots) recently emerged benign nanoparticles biomedical applications owing good water solubility, tunable surface functionalities excellent biocompatibility. The unique characteristics C-Dots make them promising candidates In this study, carbon dots-transferrin-doxorubicin covalent conjugate (C-Dots-Trans-Dox) was synthesized, characterized by different spectroscopic techniques investigated potential application anticancer treat tumors. Our vitro results demonstrate greater uptake C-Dots-Trans-Dox compared Dox alone presumably levels these Experiment showed that at 10 nM significantly more cytotoxic than alone, reducing viability 14-45%, across multiple cell lines.
