Alcohol transformations through the borrowing hydrogen (BH) methodology have attracted attention due to its high atom economy and substrate availability. Nonprecious metal heterogeneous catalysts recently been extensively explored; however, difficulty in observation of active species has prevented mechanistic studies. Here, we report on supported Mn that act as reusable for construction C–C bonds by α-alkylation ketones with alcohols BH methodology. The catalyst, a Mn2+ species-MgO mixture-deposited Al2O3 support (Mn-MgO/Al2O3), exhibits catalytic performance reactions give corresponding products 50–92% yield. present catalyst did not require addition homogeneous strong bases are typically indispensable these using reported Mn-based large energy consumption separation, recycling, waste treatment. While such reaction systems considered accelerate dehydrogenation and/or aldol condensation, MgO Mn-MgO/Al2O3, base, does contribute steps. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) measurements indicated only incorporation hydride species, which never observed alcohols, but also enhancement hydrogenating capability co-deposited Al2O3. had found direct amination over metallic Ru nano particles-MgO mixture, study reveals mechanism is extended oxidized Mn, base metal, contact MgO.
