Since the last century, we have witnessed development of molecular magnetism which deals with magnetic materials based on species, i.e., organic radicals and metal complexes. Among them, broadest attention was devoted to molecule-based ferro-/ferrimagnets, spin transition materials, including those exploring electron transfer, nanomagnets, such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), qubits, stimuli-responsive materials. Their physical properties open application horizons in sensors, data storage, spintronics, quantum computation. It found that various optical phenomena, thermochromism, photoswitching characteristics, luminescence, nonlinear chiroptical effects, well responsivity external stimuli, can be implemented into Moreover, fruitful interactions these effects provide new cross-effects multifunctionality, enriching applications optical, electronic, devices. Recently, stimuli-responsive materials have attracted great attention, while most of them respond to single or two stimuli. Thus, it is essential design multifunctional and develop their applications. The strategy that constructing high-dimensional coordination polymers facilitates the application scope a viologen-based photochromic system put forward confirmed for first time. Herein, novel multistimuli-responsive Zn-MOF with two-dimensional framework has been successfully designed synthesized. Complex 1 exhibits chromic behavior under variety external stimuli such as 365 nm UV, X-rays, heat, electricity, ethylamine. More interestingly, crystal state complex displays dual fluorescence room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emission emits yellow afterglow when turning off UV lamp. In addition, Eu(III)-functionalized hybrids, Eu3+@Zn-MOF, were prepared by coordinated postsynthetic modification based on viologen complexes sample Eu3+@Zn-MOF inherits characteristics gives distinctive europium ions. Based multicolor switching possible practical utilization was developed in fields inkless, erasable print media, electrochromic information tag printing, encryption, anticounterfeiting.

Inkless and erasable printing as a new technology has received intense attention in reducing paper waste environmental hazards caused by the use of large amounts ink. However, achieving high-resolution inkless for practical applications remains huge challenge. Herein, metal-organic framework (MOF) been synthesized, which exhibits reversible photochromic behavior. None unpaired electrons metal ions unique three-dimensional network hinder electron transfer between ligands nodes, well themselves, are conducive to prolonging photo-generated color lifetime suitable printing. By virtue proper lifetime, strong contrast before after light irradiation, transformation, content can be achieved irradiation. Notably, coated with this MOF used not only simple patterns such pictures but also even texts applications, surpassing other materials printing, almost comparable ink laser terms practicality resolution. In addition, MOF-coated reused multiple cycles without significant deterioration.

Two novel viologen-functionalized Zn(II) complexes {[Zn(cbbpy)(PTA)0.5Cl]·2H2O}n (1) and [Zn3(cbbpy)2(PTA)2(H2O)6]·(PTA)·4H2O}n (2) with a one-dimensional chain of quadrilateral rings three-fold interpenetrating two-dimensional networks, respectively, have been synthesized characterized. Both 1 2 display high contrast reversible photochromic properties under UV X-rays. In particular, exhibits an ultrafast response to UV, the photoresponse time is only 0.5 s, which faster than that most currently reported complexes, thus this compound shows potential applications in monitoring light. Importantly, first colored photoproducts can be quickly decolored by HCl vapor, circulation realized after fumigation NH3 vapor. Moreover, also inkless printing anticounterfeiting.
