Controlling the synthesis of metal nanostructures is one approach for catalyst engineering and performance optimization in electrocatalysis. As an emerging class unconventional electrocatalysts, two-dimensional (2D) metallene electrocatalysts with ultrathin sheet-like morphology have gained ever-growing attention exhibited superior electrocatalysis owing to their distinctive properties originating from structural anisotropy, rich surface chemistry, efficient mass diffusion capability. Many significant advances synthetic methods electrocatalytic applications 2D metallenes been obtained recent years. Therefore, in-depth review summarizing progress developing electrochemical highly needed. Unlike most reported reviews on metallenes, this starts by introducing preparation based classification metals (e.g., noble metals, non-noble metals) instead methods. Some typical strategies preparing each kind are enumerated detail. Then, utilization applications, especially conversion reactions, including hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen reduction fuel oxidation CO2 N2 comprehensively discussed. Finally, current challenges opportunities future research energy proposed.

To utilize intermittent renewable energy as well achieve the goals of peak carbon dioxide emissions and neutrality, various electrocatalytic devices have been developed. However, reactions, e.g., hydrogen evolution reaction/oxygen reaction in overall water splitting, polysulfide conversion lithium–sulfur batteries, formation/decomposition lithium peroxide lithium–oxygen nitrate reduction to degrade sewage, suffer from sluggish kinetics caused by multielectron transfer processes. Owing merits accelerated charge transport, optimized adsorption/desorption intermediates, raised conductivity, regulation microenvironment, ease combine with geometric characteristics, built-in electric field (BIEF) is expected overcome above problems. Here, we give a Review about very recent progress BIEF for efficient electrocatalysis. First, construction strategies characterization methods (qualitative quantitative analysis) are summarized. Then, up-to-date overviews engineering electrocatalysis, attention on electron structure optimization microenvironment modulation, analyzed discussed detail. In end, challenges perspectives proposed. Electrochemical CO2 reduction to multicarbon products faces challenges of unsatisfactory selectivity, productivity, and long-term stability. Herein, we demonstrate electroreduction in strongly acidic electrolyte (pH ≤ 1) on electrochemically reduced porous Cu nanosheets by combining the confinement effect cation synergistically modulate local microenvironment. A Faradaic efficiency 83.7 ± 1.4% partial current density 0.56 0.02 cm-2, single-pass carbon 54.4%, stable electrolysis 30 h a flow cell are demonstrated for aqueous consisting sulfuric acid KCl with pH 1. Mechanistically, accumulated species (e.g., K+ OH-) Helmholtz plane account selectivity activity toward kinetically reducing proton coverage thermodynamically favoring conversion. We find that cations facilitate C-C coupling through interaction between key intermediate *OCCO.
