With inspiration from natural systems, various soft actuators and robots have been explored in recent years with versatile applications biomedical engineering fields. Soft active materials rich stimulus-responsive characteristics an ideal candidate to devise these machines by using different manufacturing technologies. Among technologies, three-dimensional (3D) printing shows advantages fabricating constructs multiple sophisticated architectures. In this Review, we aim provide overview of progress on 3D materials, robotics performances, representative applications. Typical techniques are briefly introduced, followed state-of-the-art advances hydrogels, shape memory polymers, liquid crystalline elastomers, their hybrids as robots. From the perspective material properties, commonly used action-generation principles for typical printed discussed. Actuation locomotive behaviors, summarized. The relationship between structures action performances is also Finally, limitations each compared, remaining challenges future directions field prospected.

Localized molecular self-assembly has been developed as an effective approach for the fabrication of spatially resolved supramolecular hydrogels, showing great potential many high-tech applications. However, macroscopically structured hydrogels through remains a challenge. Herein, we report on localized low weight hydrogelators simple reaction-diffusion approach, giving rise to various patterned hydrogels. This is achieved basis acid-catalyzed hydrazone hydrogelator system. The acid was pre-loaded in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate, generating proton gradient vicinity PDMS surface after immersing aqueous solution precursors. dramatically accelerates
